Helping Mothers and Children Stay Connected—During and After Prison

The Department of Correctional Services (DOCS) has begun the process of establishing a Family Reunion Program (FRP)—which allows incarcerated people to have extended, overnight visits with family—at Albion Correctional Facility, New York’s largest prison for women.  Our Women in Prison Project (WIPP) and its Coalition for Women Prisoners have long pressed for the implementation of an FRP at Albion and, with the full support of DOCS and Commissioner Brian Fischer, helped secure an allocation of $200,000 for the program in this year’s State Budget. Drop the Rock : Countdown to Empowerment Day

Too often, the communities hardest hit by criminal justice policies are left out of the political process and are excluded from the debate on these issues. To remind New Yorkers just how critical it is for ALL of our voices to be heard on these issues, Drop the Rock—the CA’s campaign to repeal the Rockefeller Drug Laws—will launch its first-ever Drop the Rock Empowerment Day on Saturday, September 27. Revisiting Shock Incarceration: CA Releases Report Detailing Conditions at Lakeview Correctional Facility

The CA’s Prison Visiting Project (PVP) has just published a new report detailing conditions at Lakeview Correctional Facility, a minimum security prison located 50 miles outside of Buffalo and about a quarter mile from Lake Erie. The CA last visited the facility in 1996, noting then, as we did this time around, that Lakeview is not your average state prison. So, what exactly makes this facility so different? [read more]
